By the early 1950s, many non-league competitions
were well-established, but, in those days
that were well before the Pyramid idea, there
were large areas of the country which lacked
a decent quality football league. One of
these ‘areas’ was in the counties
between London and Somerset/Gloucester. The
‘gap’ had been spotted some time
before by soccer referee Norman Matthews,
but it was not until late in 1952 that he
took the key step of setting up a meeting
of club representatives in Oxford to discuss
the creation of a new league.
Exactly how many clubs were represented at
this meeting is unclear. There is no doubt,
however, about the outcome – a 16-strong
competition, which became known as the Hellenic
League after the F.A. rejected the name The
Coronation League, after, apparently, accepting
it initially. In 1956 a small second tier
was added to the league and this varied in
size over the next few seasons before becoming
a more stable section. In the year 2000 the
Hellenic League expanded again to become
a 3-section competition, with 2 regional
divisions below the Premier Division, which
is at Step 5 of the Non-League Pyramid and
feeds into the Southern League.

At the start of the 1963-1964 season, the
Hellenic League had 28 clubs in two sections.
By the
1970-1971 campaign the number of clubs had
grown to 38 and it became necessary to alter
the
structure of the league after that to accommodate
further entries to the competition. With
an
average of more than one club withdrawing
per season during these years, it can be
said that
the period was one of ‘evolution and
development’ for the Hellenic League.
With four titles and two runners-up spots
in these eight seasons, Witney Town produced
easily
the best record, with no other club able
to match their consistency. The League Management
Committee generally applied good sense regarding
where teams joining the league were placed,
with only Oxford City Reserves, who entered
Division 1 in 1968, appearing to start at
the ‘wrong level’.
Finding the record of the Hellenic League
for these proved no problem at all. The excellent
‘Non-League Football Tables’
series produced by Soccer Books Ltd. includes
one volume (published in 2007) which contains
Hellenic League details. Problems arose,
however, regarding the balancing of the columns
in the final tables because the various sources
disagree on the detail and no single source
of information gives a wholly reliable record
of the period 1967-1971. The record below
is ‘a best attempt’ to set matters
straight.

A large number of clubs applied for membership
of Division 1 and it was decided to admit
seven new members, with the 1st Division divided into two sections to accommodate
the newcomers. The clubs joining the Hellenic League
were Burnham, Easington Sports, Garsington,
Long Wittenham, Maidenhead Social, M.G. Athletic
and Oxford University Press.
Important notes
Once again sources disagreed on details in
final league tables and several versions
of these exist – most having imbalance
between the columns for goals, wins-draws-losses
and/or games/points. There is, however, no
disagreement about the positions in which
teams finished in the league tables, which
is a positive thing. A combination of the
information found and the occasional piece
