Beer in Morocco

Beer in Morocco was introduced by the French in the 20th century. Société des Brasseries du Maroc is part of the Castel Group and oversees the production and distribution of beer in the country, mostly to tourists in hotels and bars. Popular beers include Spéciale Flag (pilsner) and Stork (light lager). The Moroccan premium beer is Casablanca (also a lager), which costs more than the other two. Casablanca is also exported and, for instance, served in the Morocco pavilion at Epcot in Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida.

The breweries of Brasseries du Maroc are located in Fes, Tangier, and Casablanca, and a bottling unit exists in Marrakesh. The best-selling international beer in Morocco is Heineken, which was locally brewed by Brasseries du Maroc under the supervision of Heineken International but is now imported.

In recent years, the Moroccan craft beer scene has seen new developments. One of the most notable entrants is Amazigh Brewing Company, founded in Tétouan. Positioned as an independent and culturally rooted brewery, Amazigh Brewing combines traditional brewing methods with local and indigenous ingredients. It emphasizes artisanal quality, innovation, and a strong visual and storytelling identity influenced by Amazigh (Berber) culture.

Amazigh Brewing is also behind Frontier, a sub-brand dedicated to contract brewing and custom beverage development for bars, hotels, and restaurants across Morocco. In addition to alcoholic offerings, the company is developing a line of non-alcoholic and functional beverages tailored to local tastes and health-conscious consumers.

Unlike mass-market producers, Amazigh Brewing focuses on small-batch production, seasonal releases, and collaborations with local businesses and cultural festivals. Its emergence marks a diversification in the Moroccan beer landscape and reflects a broader trend of craft and premiumization in North African beverage markets. The Frontier facility, which will also host the company’s main headquarters, is currently in its final phase of construction.
