Corruption in Wales is generally low, like in other countries of the United Kingdom, but still persists. Examples include bribery, fraud, and abuse of public office. According to Transparency International's 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index, the United Kingdom[Note 1] scored a 71/100;[1] a higher number means less corruption.

The Bribery Act 2010 from the parliament of the United Kingdom covers bribery in Wales.

Notable cases

  • On November 9th, 2023, five men were sentenced over paying bribes to the Cardiff Council staff; it resulted in a loss of ~£417,000.[2]
  • Nathan Gill, former leader of Reform UK Wales, was charged with eight cases of bribery and one case of conspiracy to commit bribery.[3]

Fraud

Occurrences of fraud in Wales and also in England has been increasing; there was a 33% increase in incidents in 2024 compared to 2023.[4]
