West Brom moved eight points clear of third-placed Nottingham Forest with a win over Coventry, courtesy of a winner from on-loan Steven Reid.
The midfielder - recently signed from Blackburn - fired in at the back post from a Chris Brunt corner.
Later in the first half, Robert Koren appeared to have forced Graham Dorran's free-kick over the line but the lineman's flag stayed down.
Jonathan Stead put a great chance wide for the visitors in the second half.
The Baggies' victory extends their current run of victories to five matches and leaves them just two points behind league leaders Newcastle, having played a game more.
The match itself was very much a game of two halves with the home side dominant in the first and Coventry rallying to have the better of the second.
Prior to Reid's opening goal Ben Watson had narrowly failed to connect with Joe Mattock's cross from the left-wing as West Brom sought to impose themselves from the off.
Coventry came to life after the break and on the hour mark an unmarked Stead somehow diverted Sammy Clingan's inswinging free-kick wide from six yards.
Substitute Morrison then almost snatched a point at the death but West Brom hung on to secure their eighth successive victory at the Hawthorns.
West Brom manager Roberto di Matteo: "It's one more hurdle that we've passed. Nothing has been achieved but we're pleased with the three points and the six points from the last two home games.
"Tonight was a bit of a scrappy game but we managed to get the goal and put ourselves in front and then we battled, we defended our goal very dearly.
"I think our legs were a little bit tired and Coventry had nothing to lose, they threw everything at us."
Coventry boss Chris Coleman: "It's important we finish as high as we can.
"While there's even a slim glimmer of hope that we can get into the play-offs, we've got to hang on to that.
"It would be such a big thing for us. Of course, it's a long shot but there's still a lot of points to play for."
