English: The Axios Delta National Park (Ethniko Parko Delta Axiou) was reserved by law in 1971 to include the combined deltas of the Axios (or Vardar), The Loudias, and the Alkmionas, which flow into the Thermaic Gulf in northern coastal Greece from different directions in the Balkans. There new habitats had been formed by natural infilling of the Gulf, a situation similar to the new land in the Camargue, France. There are wetlands, reed beds, dunes, lagoons and forests. The region was repopulated by wild life but man has made some inroads with fish ponds and rice paddies. When the Natura 2000 program arrived the park as it was became a protected area, Delta Axiou-Loudia-Aliakmona-Evryteri Periochi-Axiopouli, ID GR1220002. Hence references that name the park and the Natura area as the same place. They are managed by one and the same government agency. The area goes up the Vardar to Axioupoli and includes a broad area around the delta.
