2002 Pre-Libertadores Playoff

[edit]

A playoff was held between the 6 best-ranked teams in the first phase of the Torneo Clausura to determine the remaining two spots for the 2002 Copa Libertadores (excluding Cerro Porteño, which already had a spot, and Cerro Corá, due to relegation). The format was a round-robin, with only first-leg matches. Sportivo Luqueño received 3 additional points for being the 2001 Championship runner-up. The top two teams at the end of the playoff were awarded the remaining two spots to compete in the 2002 Copa Libertadores.

Runner-up Determination

[edit]

As Sportivo Luqueño won the runner-up position in the Apertura Tournament, and Guaraní did the same in the Clausura Tournament, a tiebreaker was necessary. The match was played at Olimpia's stadium. Despite Luqueño's victory, which secured them the annual runner-up title, they were not awarded a spot in the next year's Copa Libertadores, just as Guaraní had experienced the previous year.

Average points

[edit]

A team's average points is the quotient obtained by dividing its accumulated points over the last three seasons by the number of matches it has played during that period.

Promotion

[edit]

This consists of a two-legged playoff, with reciprocal home advantage, to determine which division the second-to-last team in the Average Points table and the second team from the immediate lower category will play in the following year. The rules stipulated that in the case of a points tie at the end of the matches, goal difference would be considered. If the tie persisted, penalty kicks would be taken.

With a global score of 5–1, Sport Colombia ascended to the Primera División, while Colegiales was relegated to the Segunda División.

For International Tournaments

[edit]

The accumulated points table was taken into account to determine the APF representatives in the Conmebol competitions for the following year.

For Relegation and Promotion Playoff

[edit]

The average points table was used to determine relegation and the dispute for a spot in the Primera División for the following clubs:

  • Cerro Corá, which was directly relegated to the Second Division for finishing in the last position of the aforementioned ranking. In its place, the champion of the División Intermedia, Deportivo Recoleta, was promoted.
  • And Colegiales, which, due to having the second worst average, had to play the promotion playoff in two home-and-away matches against the runner-up of the División Intermedia, Club Sport Colombia. The first match ended with a 1-0 victory for Sport Colombia. The decisive match was also won by Sport Colombia, with a 4-1 scoreline. Finally, the team from the lower division achieved promotion for the following season with a global score of 5–1 in its favor, while Colegiales was relegated to the Second Division.
