Samin Tan (born May 10, 1965) is an Indonesian businessman known for his prominent role in the mining industry. He is the former chairman of Asia Resource Minerals (formerly Bumi Plc) and the founder of Borneo Lumbung Energi & Metal, a major coking coal producer in Indonesia. Despite his business successes, his career has been marked by legal challenges, including a bribery case for which he was acquitted.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Samin Tan was born in Jakarta, Indonesia. He graduated with a degree in accounting from Tarumanagara University in 1986. He began his career as an auditor at PricewaterhouseCoopers, gaining experience in finance and business management.[1]
Career
[edit]Borneo Lumbung Energi & Metal
[edit]In 2007, Tan founded Borneo Lumbung Energi & Metal (BLEM), focusing on the production of premium coking coal (also known as metallurgical coal and used in the production of steel). The company became one of Indonesia's leading suppliers, reaching a peak production of 4.2 million tons in 2012. In 2011, Standard Chartered lent $1 billion to BLEM which was used to buy a 23.8% stake in Bumi Plc (later renamed Asia Resource Minerals), the single largest underwritten loan by any Asian bank that year.[2]
Legal Challenges
[edit]In February 2019, Tan was accused of bribing Eni Maulani Saragih, a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives and Deputy Chairperson of the Lower House's Commission VII (related to energy and mining), with Rp 5 billion ($350,000). The alleged bribe was intended to resolve issues related to restoring BLEM's revoked mining license. Tan was later arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in April 2021 after being on the run for over 12 months.[3]
In August 2021, despite evidence of the bribe transfers and partial confessions from related parties, the Jakarta Corruption Court acquitted Tan of all charges. When the KPK later appealed this decision to the Supreme Court, the appeal was rejected in June 2022. [4]
