Stefan Wyszyński (3 August 1901 – 28 May 1981)[1] was a Polish Roman Catholic prelate who served as the Primate of Poland and Archbishop of Warsaw from 1948 until his death in 1981. He was made a Cardinal in 1953 and was beatified in 2021.
Early life and education
[change | change source]Stefan Wyszyński was born in Zuzela, Poland. He was ordained a priest on 3 August 1924 by Bishop Wojciech Owczarek.[1][2]
Ecclesiastical career
[change | change source]Wyszyński was appointed the Bishop of Lublin in 1946 and consecrated by Cardinal August Hlond. In 1948, he became the Archbishop of Warsaw and Gniezno and was named the Primate of Poland. Pope Pius XII made him a cardinal in 1953. He played a significant role in opposing the communist regime in Poland.[2][3]
Beatification
[change | change source]Stefan Wyszyński was beatified on 12 September 2021 by Pope Francis. The beatification ceremony at the Temple of Divine Providence was led by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro.[4][5]
