Review and Book Production
You’ve submitted your book proposal or manuscript to your editor—what's next?
Though the process varies slightly depending on your subject area, the first step usually involves our editors liaising with series editors and external readers to have your manuscript peer reviewed. Once you get the review reports, you can revise your manuscript and resubmit a final version to us. This version of the manuscript will be checked and go into production.
Editor and Peer Review
In the initial review, the publishing team will assess the suitability of your book proposal for publication, consulting with the editors of the series where appropriate. At this stage we evaluate the quality of your proposal, ascertain that your work is a good fit for our portfolio and assess its marketability.
This phase may also include our editors contacting experts in your field, providing them with the proposal and a table of contents for their review and feedback. Once this round of reviews is complete and a publishing contract has been signed, the next step is to prepare your manuscript.
Once you have submitted your final manuscript, another round of reviews will be conducted by experts in your field. Feedback is collected by your editor who will work with you and other editors to adapt your work and shape your manuscript so that it is ready for production and publication.
Book Production
Once we have received your final manuscript and your manuscript has been reviewed, your book will go into production.
Typesetting Process
Your content editor will pass on your manuscript to the production departments and a production editor will guide you through the steps of production and publication.
In the typesetting process, your manuscript will be adapted to our house style, including any special characters, tables, formulae, and graphics. We work with professional typesetters who are familiar with the specifications of our house style and templates.
You will receive two sets of page proofs. In the first round, we ask you to make any typesetting corrections. In the second round, you will check the corrections that have been made before giving us permission to print.
Alternative Typesetting Options
If you have experience with typesetting software or have special requirements for your manuscript that our typesetters can't accommodate, we offer authors the option to typeset their manuscripts themselves. In these cases we provide them with a Word, LaTex, or InDesign template as well as our house font and step-by-step advice on using them. They then submit the manuscript to us as a printable PDF file known as a Camera-Ready Copy, or CRC. If you choose this option, please ask your editors for further advice.
Book Cover and Front Matter
We are open to some suggestions for cover art, but please ask your editor for more information on the options available to you.
As soon as the book goes into production, we finalize the font cover and blurb. Prior to publication the front cover will be advertised on the website and in our catalog.
Next step: Publication and Promotion
The next step in the publication process is for your book to be published and promoted.
