New Website Launch - FAQ
De Gruyter and Brill launched a new combined platform, degruyterbrill.com, on April 3rd, 2025. This new site brings together products from both publishers, providing a smooth experience for you and your patrons.
Here’s what you need to know about the move to the new platform:
Platform and Website Transition
1. What has changed with the website launch?
Degruyterbrill.com now replaces degruyter.com as our main website. All pages from degruyter.com automatically redirect to degruyterbrill.com, ensuring a seamless transition. Your access, subscriptions, and authentication methods remain unchanged. All Brill books are now discoverable on degruyterbrill.com, but you can still access and purchase titles via brill.com, with direct links provided on each product page. Other imprint websites, like vr-elibrary.de, will also remain available for now.
2. Is our current access to De Gruyter and Brill content affected?
No, your access remains unchanged. All existing subscriptions and access rights continue as before. Brill content is still accessible through brill.com, and all Brill books and metadata are now also available on degruyterbrill.com.
3. How is this merger impacting metadata and cataloguing records?
The metadata for all titles is integrated into degruyterbrill.com, creating a unified catalogue. Each product page for Brill and Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht books includes a direct link to brill.com for purchasing or accessing titles. We are committed to maintaining high-quality metadata to support your cataloguing needs.
4. Do the existing links to content still work?
Yes, all existing links to De Gruyter content automatically redirect to degruyterbrill.com. Brill.com remains active, so no immediate changes are needed for your institution’s links.
5. Is there a timeline for further platform development?
The current focus is on successfully launching degruyterbrill.com and ensuring a smooth transition. We will continue improving the platform based on user feedback and evolving needs, and we will keep you informed about next steps. We expect to fully migrate all content to degruyterbrill.com, but not before 2026 for V&R content and 2027 for Brill content.
Access, Authentication, and Alerts
7. Are there any changes to the authentication process?
If you use EZProxy you need to download the new stanza from the OCLC website with the new domain so that access remains available. Apart from this the authentication process remains unchanged. Your patrons continue to access content using their existing credentials and authentication methods.
8. Will there be an email alert or RSS feed for new articles and content?
We are planning to introduce an alert function (not RSS) to notify users about new articles and content. More details will be shared as we develop this feature, but it will take a while.
9. Are there any planned downtimes during the transition?
No, we have planned the transition carefully to ensure continuous access to all content without disruption. However, changing a domain means that the old site may remain in people's browser caches. So in case of problems, it is useful to remind users to delete their browser cache and restart the browser to ensure they always get the latest version of the site.
10. Who should we contact if we encounter issues or have questions?
Our customer service team is ready to help. Please contact service@degruyter.com for any assistance.
Business Models and Subscription Changes
11. Are there any changes to subscription models or pricing?
No, there are no immediate changes to subscription models or pricing. If any updates are planned in the future, we will provide advance notice.
12. How will the Evidence-Based Acquisition (EBA) model change?
For now, there are no changes to the existing EBA models. However, we are happy to offer combined De Gruyter and Brill options for institutions looking to explore a broader range of content.
13. Will the merger of De Gruyter and Brill reduce the choice of publishers for authors?
No, the diversity of our publishing programs remains. De Gruyter Brill continues to support a wide range of disciplines, authors, and publishing models, ensuring researchers have ample opportunities to publish their work.
14. Do the Transformative Agreements now apply to all business areas within De Gruyter Brill?
Yes, we now offer All-Inclusive journal deals that provide access to both De Gruyter and Brill content, as well as the opportunity to publish in all eligible journals under our Transformative Agreements.
15. For journals, will the Subscribe-to-Open (S2O) model be applied to all areas of De Gruyter Brill?
Currently, De Gruyter and Brill have different approaches to open access transformation, including S2O. Over the next year, we will be working on a unified strategy to ensure a cohesive approach across De Gruyter Brill.
16. Are there any changes to the payment or billing system?
Not at the moment. If any changes are planned, we will inform customers well in advance.
Metadata, Discovery, and Institutional Considerations
17. How do the changes affect usage data reporting?
Librarians continue to receive usage data from their subscriptions and purchases on the respective platforms: DG Data for all products on degruyterbrill.com and brill.com for Brill products.
18. What about Alma integration and metadata quality?
We recognize that Alma integration is a key concern, and we are working on solutions before merging any systems. Our goal is to maintain De Gruyter’s high metadata standards and improve metadata quality for Brill titles to meet industry guidelines.
19. What happens to Partner Presses and their impact on EBA?
The integration of partner presses is still being reviewed. We acknowledge that changes in embargo policies and rolling walls could affect EBA libraries, and we aim to communicate any upcoming changes well in advance.
20. Will Brill’s price lists and title lists remain available?
Yes, we recognize the value of Brill’s transparent pricing and title lists, and we plan to maintain this level of accessibility. We will also explore ways to improve title list availability across De Gruyter Brill.
21. How is the author journey handled on the new platform?
Ensuring a consistent and clear author journey is a priority. We will be aligning the submission and publishing processes for both De Gruyter and Brill to provide a seamless experience.

The Basics: Access & Authentication
What access and authentication methods are supported by the platform?
Our platform supports the following authentication options:
- Federated access (SAML based, via Shibboleth or OpenAthens),
- IP Recognition,
- Remote access via Secure Proxy Server (such as EZProxy) or Virtual Private Network (VPN).
Individuals can authenticate via username/password. For further information, please visit the page Content Access.
How can I update my IPs?
De Gruyter has partnered with The IP Registry to make the process of monitoring and updating the IP addresses used to authenticate on our platform easier for institutional administrators. Since changes and updates to your IPs can only be executed by The IP Registry, it is necessary for you to register with them. Further information on The IP Registry can be found on our page Content Access.
Do you support Shibboleth authentication?
Yes. The degruyterbrill.com website is accessible for all members of the following federations:
- DFN-AAI
- SWISS-EDU
- UK Federation
- Open Athens
- Any other federation that is a member of EduGain.
If you would like to use Federated Access, please send your Entity ID (Shibboleth) or OpenAthens ID to our Sales Operations Team. We will be happy to assist you with the next steps!
I am experiencing problems with my EZProxy. What can I do?
Please ensure that you have registered your proxy IP with The IP Registry and that you are using the up-to-date Stanza. Visit our page Content Access for further information.
What is the WAYFless URL structure?
The WAYFless URL structure is: https://connect.liblynx.com/wa...[CustomerEntityID]&target=[TargetURL]. Previous WAYFless URLs will be redirected.
Why can't I see the “Download book” button for a certain title, even though I have licensed the eBook?
The reason could be that the title was published by one of our publisher partners. Due to security concerns most of our partners have requested us to remove the complete PDF for download from the platform, since our eBooks are all DRM free. Those titles can be read and downloaded chapter by chapter.
Can I access content via discovery services?
Yes, we provide open URL format links to discovery services via KBART files.
Who can I contact if I have access problems or a question?
Our Sales Operations team is happy to assist you with any queries you may have. Please include in your email any links, screenshots or further details that might help us to solve your query quickly. In case of problems with your access—especially if your institution is not recognized by our platform, please send us a screenshot of the following page: https://www.degruyterbrill.com/login/_debug.
